The Clinton County Veterans Services Commission (CCVSC) recently received a donation to make multiple additions and updates to their Veterans Memorial area.

According to Jim Alcorn, Veterans’ Service Officer, they will add an Afghanistan War section to the wall. He stated, “We just want to make sure that we honor those Afghanistan veterans, and those people who have actually served multiple campaigns.”

They also plan to move panels around for “aesthetic balance,” add benches to honor individuals who made donations, and make the memorial more handicap accessible.

According to Jim, the CCVSC met with a United States Department of Defense (DOD) contractor in September to discuss the construction of the wall. The DOD is responsible for constructing all memorials. They hope to break ground this April, which would project them to finish by the end of 2025.

According to Jim, they also added a “digital footprint.” This allows individuals to narrow down the location of their loved one’s name by visiting the website or scanning a QR code. Jim stated, “The changes are geared towards the future generations in an effort to help the community find their Veteran.”

To support the veterans service office, individuals can buy bricks for loved ones who have served. The bricks remain at the memorial indefinitely and cost up to $250 per brick. For individuals who do not have relatives who were veterans, there are “two unofficial programs.” Individuals can volunteer to clean the memorial. The veterans service office is solely responsible for the care and maintenance of the memorial.  The second way for individuals to support is through donations.

The upcoming veterans building across from UDF is not related to the CCVSC directly. It is a medical facility tied to Chillicothe Veterans Hospital, according to Jim.
