On November 5th, 2024, 20,980 people voted in the general election in Clinton County. According to Andrea Tacoronte, Director of the Clinton County Board of Elections, this was the highest percentage turnout of voters in Clinton County, accounting for over 75 percent of registered voters at the time. Out of those who voted in the general election, over 7,000 voted early in-person, roughly 2,400 voted by mail, and the remaining votes were cast on Election Day.
Of the 28,338 current registered voters, a number that has increased since the election, roughly 31 percent are registered Republicans, almost 4 percent are registered Democrats, and the remaining 65 percent are not party-affiliated. According to Andrea, this is because an individual’s party affiliation is determined by the ballot they pull in the primary election. Andrea stated that under 9,000 voters typically vote in primary elections, meaning that the remaining voters have not been assigned a party affiliation.
Andrea also spoke on bipartisanship and election integrity. She stated, “Even though we are in the business of doing political elections, we are completely bipartisan, completely neutral… Everything is completely bipartisan all the time because it is more important that it be fair and equitable.” She shared that the Board of Directors is made up of two Republicans and two Democrats. The individuals who run the polls are also made up of a bipartisan team. She also mentioned that absentee voting by mail has been around since the 1800s, originally intended for military personnel, and has since expanded.
There are 36 precincts in Clinton County. On election day, each of the precincts has a bipartisan team of four working at each one. The precincts are divided up between 12 different polling locations. According to Andrea, there were 160 people working at the polls on election day. The poll workers began at 5:30 AM and worked until 7:30 PM. They are paid $124. Andrea also acknowledged the 16 individuals that work in the early voting center for 12 days prior to the election.
