Starting in the fall of 2025, Laurel Oaks plans to add an Alternative/Electric Vehicle (EV) Technician program. Laurel Oaks received a $6.8 million state grant, making this possible, along with the expansion of other programs.

The two-year program will teach students how to make, install, and service EV batteries for vehicles ranging from electric bikes to semi-trucks. According to Chris Pinelo, Great Oaks’ Community Relations and Education Foundation Strategist, the students will learn about regulations, electrical safety procedures, practical skills, retail operations, and gain an understanding of EV batteries.

The program will take place in a new building on the Laurel Oaks campus. In addition to housing the EV program, the building will also house the preexisting Construction Technology program. The groundbreaking ceremony for the building occurred on September 23rd, 2024, where Lt. Gov. Jon Husted was present. Also in attendance at the ceremony was Honda/LG Energy Solution. Honda/LG Energy Solution is constructing an EV battery plant in Fayette County, one of the counties Laurel Oaks serves. The plant will span over two million square feet and is projected to create over 2,000 jobs related to EV technology.

In addition to the EV program, Laurel Oaks will be expanding its Welding and Fabrication program. Through the grant, they also added a Law Enforcement program in the fall of 2024. Laurel Oaks also has preliminary plans to add a U.S. Army Junior ROTC program in 2025, according to Andy McCool, Dean of Instruction, as reported by Wilmington News Journal.

The applications for these programs opened on November 15th, 2024. They are reviewed and students receive their program placements beginning in February. Laurel Oaks is also seeking an Alternative/EV Technician program instructor.
