Residents of the 4-A Ward should expect to see a D-6 liquor permit on their ballot on November 5th. The General Denver is petitioning to sell “wine, mixed beverages, and spirituous liquor” on Sundays at their restaurant, bars, patio, and rooftop. The issue requires a majority yes vote in order to pass.
A D-6 liquor permit is required of any business in Ohio that would like to sell wine, mixed drinks, and spirits on Sundays. According to an amendment of the Ohio Revised Code, A D-6 permit allows Sunday alcohol sales during the same hours that the permit holder is allowed to sell alcohol Monday through Saturday.
After the repeal of Prohibition in 1933, this practice was put in place to “ensure the safe consumption of alcoholic beverages and an orderly, competitive marketplace”, according to the Ohio Department of Commerce. This governance model allows voters to have a direct influence regarding the types of alcohol sold in their precinct and “where, when, and how” that alcohol may be sold.
The General Denver features two bars and a Four Seasons Room “to socialize or sip any time of day”, in addition to their restaurant. When asked if General Denver had a comment about the D-6 permit on the ballot, Brad Reid, Manager, stated, “We’re just hoping that it passes… for business sake and for other things.”
The General Denver previously had a D-6 permit but due to a change in ownership, they needed to re-initiate the issue. The restaurant is unsure at this time if they plan to expand alcohol sales at the other restaurants owned by the same LLC, 73 Grill, located on OH-380, and Rod’s Capricorn Inn, located on OH-730.
